What to Expect
An honest walk-through of what the first five days of outpatient drug and alcohol treatment actually look like at Altura Recovery in Bellaire.
Outpatient rehab isn't a vacation and it isn't a punishment. It's a structured clinical program designed to keep you safe and teach you new skills while you stay in your life.
You arrive at our Bellaire clinic in the morning. Plan on two to three hours for admission paperwork. You'll meet:
You'll do a urine drug screen and a breath alcohol test. You'll get a tour of the building, meet your group, and either start groups that same day or the next morning depending on time.
If you're starting in PHP, here's a typical day:
You leave by 3 PM. You're expected to attend a 12-step or peer support meeting most evenings (we can recommend Houston meetings).
This is when most people hit a wall. The adrenaline of admission is gone. You're not high or drunk. The work is real. About 70% of clients tell us day 2 or 3 is the hardest. Knowing that ahead of time helps.
Tools we use to get you through:
By day 3 or 4, the schedule stops feeling foreign. You know the staff, you know your group, you know where the bathroom is. Sleep starts to improve. Appetite returns. The fog lifts.
By Friday of week one, most clients tell us they're surprised by how much better they already feel — and how much there still is to do. That mix of relief and weight is normal.
We invite family to a virtual orientation in your first week. We share what to expect, how to support without enabling, and answer questions. Family therapy sessions begin in week two for clients who want them.
If you're in PHP, you're not working — it's the equivalent of a full-time clinical commitment. Most clients use FMLA or short-term disability. We provide documentation for your employer and HR.
If you're in IOP, you can keep working. IOP is 9 hours per week, in AM or PM tracks.
Many clients in their first week of PHP move into structured sober housing through one of our partner sober living programs. The benefit: no temptation at home, peer support 24/7, structured evening routines. Learn more about PHP with housing.
Aspire Recovery Homes also maintains Houston resources for women's sober living and men's sober living.
Week one is hard. Week two is easier. By week three, you'll wonder how you ever lived the other way. The clients we see fail are the ones who quit before week three. The ones who stay get better.
