For Families
Practical, clinical-grade guidance for spouses, parents, and adult children of someone in outpatient drug and alcohol treatment at Altura Recovery.
You can't get sober for them. You can love them, set boundaries, take care of yourself, and let the clinical team do the clinical work.
Family does: show up at family sessions, communicate honestly, take care of the household so your loved one can focus on treatment, ask the clinical team questions, learn about addiction as a disease.
Family does not: interrogate, lecture, micromanage, threaten, search bags, demand daily reports on group content, or try to be a substitute therapist.
Helpful:
Not helpful:
You've probably been managing this for months or years. You're exhausted, scared, possibly angry. That doesn't go away when your loved one walks into treatment. Strongly recommended:
Your recovery is your recovery, not their recovery. Both can happen at the same time.
Family therapy is included in our PHP and IOP programs. Typical structure:
Boundaries are about you, not them. "I will not lie to your boss" is a boundary. "You will not drink in this house" is also a boundary (and a stipulation of you continuing to live together). Boundaries you can enforce. Threats you can't enforce will be ignored.
Common, healthy boundaries during outpatient treatment:
Most people in early recovery have at least one slip. It does not mean treatment failed and it does not mean they're hopeless. The right response:
What not to do: shame them, kick them out (unless safety requires it), or assume the program isn't working. Relapse is often when the deepest work begins.
