Common questions
Honest answers about cost, confidentiality, schedule, and what outpatient treatment in Houston actually looks like.
Partial Hospitalization (PHP) is the most intensive form of outpatient addiction treatment — five days a week, five to six hours a day, while you live at home or in sober living. It's typically the right level of care after detox or residential, or when you need full daily structure. Intensive Outpatient (IOP) is three days a week, about three hours per session, with morning or evening tracks designed around work, school, and family. Both include group therapy, individual counseling, family programming, and psychiatric support. Most clients step from PHP down to IOP as they stabilize.
Yes. Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) offers morning and evening tracks specifically so working adults can keep their jobs while in treatment — three sessions a week, about nine hours total. After IOP, our Structured Outpatient Program (SOP) lets you step down to just one weekly group and one weekly individual therapy session — enough accountability to protect your recovery without disrupting your work life. We're also experienced with FMLA paperwork and employer communication when a client needs short-term leave to start PHP. Recovery shouldn't cost you your job.
Most likely, yes — at least in part. Altura Recovery is in-network with Ambetter from Superior HealthPlan, Cigna, Curative, UnitedHealthcare, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, plus most major EAPs including ComPsych, Magellan, Lyra, Spring Health, Optum, and LifeWorks. Even if your plan is out-of-network with us, many PPO policies still cover a meaningful portion of outpatient treatment. We complete free, no-obligation benefits verifications and tell you your real out-of-pocket cost before you commit to anything. Call or text 713-766-1330 or use our online form to check.
Yes. All addiction treatment is protected by HIPAA, and substance use disorder records get additional protection under federal law 42 CFR Part 2. That means your employer cannot legally access your treatment records, your information cannot be shared with anyone without your written consent, and Altura Recovery will not even confirm to an outside caller that you are or were a client. We take confidentiality seriously because we know it's often what keeps people from picking up the phone.
Sometimes — it depends on what you're using and how long you've been using it. We don't offer medical detox at Altura, but if you need one, we'll help you find a quality Houston-area detox provider and admit you straight into our PHP or IOP program when you're medically stable. If you don't need medical detox (most clients using alcohol moderately, or stimulants, or marijuana don't), you can start outpatient care directly. A short admissions conversation tells us which path you need.
An IOP day usually runs about three hours and is built around small-group therapy — often two groups back-to-back with a short break — plus a check-in at the start and a wind-down at the end. Topics rotate across relapse prevention, coping skills, trauma-informed work, communication, and the deeper drivers of addiction, all delivered through approaches like CBT, DBT, and motivational interviewing. You'll also meet one-on-one with your individual counselor on a regular schedule, and your family will be invited into family education at the right point in your care.
No. Altura Recovery is in-network with commercial insurance plans (Ambetter from Superior HealthPlan, Cigna, Curative, UnitedHealthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas) and most major EAPs. We also accept self-pay. We do not accept Medicare or Medicaid. If you have one of those plans, please call us anyway at 713-766-1330 — we'll point you toward quality Houston-area programs that do.
Length of stay depends on the level of care and your individual progress. PHP typically runs two to four weeks before stepping down. IOP commonly runs eight to twelve weeks. Most clients then step down to Structured Outpatient (SOP) — one weekly group and one weekly individual therapy session — for two to six months. After that, many clients step down to weekly individual therapy and stay connected through our alumni community. Your treatment team reviews your progress regularly and adjusts your plan — recovery is not a fixed package, it's a sequence of decisions made with you.
