Detox and residential treatment in Houston — placement, coordination, and the step-down after

Altura Recovery is outpatient — we don't run a detox unit or residential facility. What we do is place you (or your loved one) into the right Houston-area detox or residential program through our vetted partners, manage the insurance, and bring you back into our PHP, IOP, and sober living the day you step down.

What "detox" and "residential" actually mean

Short answer: does Altura provide detox or residential treatment?

No. Altura Recovery is outpatient only. When detox or residential treatment is clinically needed first, Altura coordinates placement with vetted partners and then brings the client into PHP, IOP, or sober living-supported outpatient care after discharge.

These two get confused all the time. They're not the same level of care.

  • Detox (Medical Detoxification) — 24-hour medical management of acute withdrawal from alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines, or stimulants. Typically 3–7 days. Required when withdrawal is medically dangerous (alcohol and benzo withdrawal can be fatal without medical supervision).
  • Residential (Inpatient Rehab / RTC) — 24-hour clinical treatment in a non-hospital setting, typically 28–60 days. For people who can't safely live at home during early recovery or need to physically remove themselves from a using environment.
  • What comes after — Both detox and residential are the start, not the end. The relapse research is clear: people who step down through PHP → IOP → sober living after detox or residential have dramatically better long-term outcomes than people who go straight home.

How we place you (or your loved one)

We coordinate directly with vetted Houston-area detox and residential partners. The placement process:

  1. Free clinical assessment — one phone call, 15–30 minutes, with an Altura admissions clinician (LCDC/LCSW)
  2. Insurance verification — we run benefits on the detox or residential program before you commit
  3. Partner matching — we recommend the right Houston partner based on clinical need, insurance, gender, special considerations (medical complexity, dual-diagnosis acuity, MAT, faith preference, etc.)
  4. Direct admission coordination — we book the bed, coordinate transport if needed, send your records ahead
  5. Active case management during your stay — we stay in touch with the detox/residential team, plan your step-down, and reserve your spot in our PHP or IOP
  6. Step-down to Altura — the day you discharge from detox or residential, you walk straight into our PHP or IOP. No gap. No lost momentum. No re-paying for assessments.

Why coordinated detox-to-outpatient outperforms standalone treatment

  • The first 30 days post-discharge are the highest relapse-risk window. (NIDA) Continuous care during that window dramatically improves outcomes.
  • SAMHSA's continuum-of-care research consistently shows that people who complete a full continuum (detox → residential → IOP → outpatient → aftercare) have better 6-month and 12-month sobriety rates than those who stop after detox or residential alone. (SAMHSA, Recovery Housing: Best Practices)
  • Single-call coordination means one insurance verification, one set of records, one clinical team that follows you all the way through. Without it, families end up making 6+ calls to 6+ facilities and starting over at each step.

Insurance — most detox and residential is covered

We're in-network with Ambetter from Superior HealthPlan, Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare, Cigna, Aetna, and Curative for our outpatient services. Our detox and residential partners are also in-network with most major insurers — we verify benefits at both levels before any commitment.

For uninsured or underinsured families: we have partners with scholarship slots, sliding-scale arrangements, and self-pay structures. Call us before assuming it's out of reach.

Sober living after detox or residential

For the housing step-down, we coordinate with separately operated sober living partners and often share Aspire Recovery Homes' gender-specific resources: sober living for women in Houston and sober living for men in Houston.

When to call now versus when to wait

Call now if: active alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal (medical emergency potential), opioid overdose risk, suicidal ideation, recent overdose, a teen with active substance use, or a loved one who's said "I'll go to treatment" — that window closes fast.

Call this week if: using is interfering with work, relationships, or health but no acute medical risk, multiple failed attempts to stop on your own, or a family member you don't know how to help.

Detox & residential placement — common questions

Does Altura have its own detox or residential facility?

No. Altura is outpatient — PHP, IOP, SOP, virtual treatment, and partner-coordinated sober living. We place clients into vetted Houston-area detox and residential partners, then bring them back into our outpatient programs after discharge.

Why use Altura to coordinate instead of calling a detox directly?

Three reasons. One: we know which Houston partners are clinically solid and which aren't — and we'll tell you. Two: we run insurance at both the inpatient and outpatient level so there are no surprises at discharge. Three: your step-down to IOP is reserved before you even enter detox, so there's no gap when you discharge.

How fast can you place me / my loved one into detox?

Same day to 48 hours for most cases. Acute alcohol or benzo withdrawal is an emergency — for those calls, we move within hours.

What's the cost of detox and residential?

Detox is typically 100% covered by insurance after deductible (medically necessary care). Residential varies — usually covered at 50–100% in-network. We verify benefits at both levels before you commit so there are no surprises.

Do you treat teens at detox or residential?

Detox and residential placement for adolescents goes through different partners than adult placement. Yes, we coordinate that too. Call our admissions line and ask for adolescent care.

What if I don't have insurance?

We have partners with scholarship slots, sliding-scale arrangements, and self-pay programs. Don't assume it's out of reach without calling first.

Will you make my decision for me?

No — we recommend, you decide. The clinical assessment is consultative. Our job is to give you a clear, evidence-based recommendation and let you (or the family) choose the path.
