Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is outpatient treatment?
Outpatient treatment allows you to receive clinical care while continuing to live at home or in a sober living environment. Our outpatient levels include PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program), IOP (Intensive Outpatient), and SOP (Standard Outpatient), depending on your needs. Outpatient treatment is ideal for individuals seeking structure, accountability, and expert care without needing 24/7 supervision.
What is the difference between inpatient and outpatient treatment?
Inpatient treatment requires clients to live at a facility 24/7, often during the earliest phase of stabilization. Outpatient treatment, on the other hand, allows clients to return home or to a sober living environment after attending scheduled clinical sessions. At Altura, outpatient care provides flexibility while still delivering high-quality therapeutic and psychiatric support. This model works well for those ready to build recovery into real-life routines.
How long is outpatient treatment?
- PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program) typically lasts about 4 weeks. It offers the highest level of outpatient support, with 5 full days of clinical programming per week.
- IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program) usually runs for 12 weeks. It includes 3 days per week of therapy, education, and peer support, allowing time for work, school, or sober living responsibilities.
- SOP (Standard Outpatient Program) can continue for up to a year, depending on your needs. It consists of weekly 1:1 sessions and/or small therapy groups and is often used to support long-term growth.
We believe in investing time to build a strong foundation. Our step-down model is like constructing a house of recovery—one that can weather storms, adapt to change, and stand tall long after treatment ends.
What is the difference between PHP, IOP, and SOP?
PHP, IOP, and SOP are levels of outpatient care that gradually transition you into more independence. PHP offers full-day, 5-day-per-week programming, making it suitable for individuals who need stability without full hospitalization. IOP is 3 days/week and includes intensive therapy while still providing flexibility. SOP is our most flexible level—designed for individuals maintaining recovery who benefit from weekly therapy and accountability. This structure allows you to build real-life skills while receiving ongoing support.
Do you treat both mental health and addiction?
Yes. Altura specializes in dual diagnosis treatment for co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Our care integrates evidence-based therapies like CBT, DBT, EMDR, and mindfulness with psychiatric oversight and recovery planning. We treat the person as a whole—not just their symptoms.
What types of therapy do you use?
We offer CBT, DBT, EMDR, mindfulness, motivational interviewing, relapse prevention, family systems therapy, and more. Individual therapy is central to every client’s care plan, especially during SOP. Learn more on our Therapies & Modalities page.
Do you offer family therapy or support?
Absolutely. We involve families through therapy sessions, weekly updates (with consent), and educational resources. Visit our For Families & Loved Ones page to learn how we help you heal together. Family involvement is often essential to long-term recovery success.
What if I don’t have insurance?
We believe that care should be accessible to all. If you do not have insurance, we can develop personalized pricing plans based on your unique situation. Our team will work with you to ensure financial barriers do not stop you from getting the help you need. Please contact us for a confidential discussion.
Do you accept insurance?
Yes. We work with most out-of-network insurance plans and can support you through the entire process—including benefits verification, paperwork submission, and claim navigation. Our goal is to make the process seamless and reduce stress so you can focus on your healing.
How much does treatment cost?
Costs vary depending on your level of care, how long you attend, and the services involved. Our admissions team will guide you through a personalized estimate after your intake assessment. We also offer private pay plans and assistance with out-of-network insurance claims.
Can I keep working or going to school during treatment?
Yes. Especially in IOP and SOP, our programs are designed to work around your schedule. Many clients attend therapy in the afternoon or evening while maintaining their work, education, or parenting responsibilities. We believe recovery should fit into your life—not remove you from it.
Where are you located?
We are based in Houston, Texas, with easy access for clients in Bellaire, West University, Greenway Plaza, and the Galleria area. We also partner with Aspire Recovery Homes for nearby sober living accommodations.
Do you offer virtual therapy?
Yes. Altura offers virtual therapy for SOP, individual counseling, and family support when clinically appropriate. This provides flexible options for clients managing transportation or location challenges.
What ages do you treat?
We provide care for adults 18+. However, we are actively developing clinical programming specifically for adolescents and teenagers. If you’re seeking support for someone under 18, we encourage you to reach out for a discovery call so we can understand the situation and share what options may be available. Our team is committed to helping families find appropriate, compassionate support for young people navigating mental health and substance use challenges. We provide care for adults 18+. If you are looking for services for adolescents or seniors, we’re happy to provide appropriate referrals or collaborate on individualized solutions.
Can I start treatment while living in sober living?
Yes. Many of our clients live in sober living while attending outpatient treatment at Altura. We partner with Aspire Recovery Homes, offering structured, supportive environments to reinforce recovery.
What happens in an intake assessment?
You’ll meet with a member of our clinical team to review your background, goals, challenges, and preferences. Together, we’ll determine the level of care and treatment plan that best fits your needs. It’s a welcoming, nonjudgmental conversation designed to help you feel understood from day one.
How quickly can I start treatment?
Most clients begin treatment within 24–72 hours of completing their intake assessment. Our admissions team works quickly to ensure you can begin as soon as possible.
What if I’ve relapsed before?
Relapse does not mean failure. It means something needs to be revisited or restructured. We approach relapse with compassion and clinical clarity, helping you understand what happened and how to move forward without shame.
Can I just do individual therapy?
Yes. While we encourage comprehensive care, you can attend individual therapy sessions with one of our licensed therapists as part of SOP or a custom plan. Therapy is a powerful starting point for long-term growth and emotional healing.
What is dual diagnosis treatment?
Dual diagnosis treatment addresses both mental health conditions and substance use together. This could include depression, PTSD, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or trauma, alongside addiction. Learn more about our integrated approach on our Dual Diagnosis Treatment page.
What if I’m not ready to stop using completely?
That’s okay. Recovery is not a one-size-fits-all process. Schedule a discovery call with our team so we can understand where you’re at. We’ll help you explore options that fit your needs and goals—whether that means harm reduction, motivational therapy, or full abstinence. Our discovery call is not therapy; it’s a chance to listen, understand, and help you decide what’s next.
What is a discovery call?
A discovery call is a confidential, pressure-free conversation where we learn more about your situation and explain how we might be able to help. It’s not a clinical or therapy session—just an opportunity to talk openly with someone who cares. You can share what’s going on, ask questions, and explore options at your own pace.
We’re here to help you take the next step, whether that’s treatment, coaching, or just clarity.
